True North Aid believes that one aspect of repairing the nation-to-nation relationship between non-Indigenous and Indigenous people in Canada begins helping to restore that which has been lost due to colonialism and forced assimilation including culture and language.
True North Aid encourages and funds Indigenous-led initiatives across Turtle Island that reclaim identity, customs, traditions, spirituality, and language. In particular, there is increased awareness that connecting Indigneous youth with culturally relevant and land-based practices bolsters self-esteem, and encourages community leadership.
True North Aid is proud to support various Community-Led Initiatives across the country with cultural revitalization programs such as Awaken the Canoes, Buffalo Narrows Fiddle Program, Beauval’s Elder and Youth Culture Interaction camps, and various on-the-land programs that emphasize the importance of Indigenous culture to youth.
Indigenous peoples have the right to practise and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs. This includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of their cultures, such as archaeological and historical sites, artefacts, designs, ceremonies, technologies and visual and performing arts and literature.
