From All Nations Paddle Up: “Without the support of True North Aid, we would not have been able to host Awaken the Canoes. This healing journey was essential to remind our youth of all the possibilities that lie ahead, and showcase the value in traditional activities that offer an alternative to drugs and alcohol. A different path forward, made possible with your generous support. And for that, we say emote!”

About the Canoe Journey: For over thirty years, ocean-going dugout canoes have travelled along the coastal corridor of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. Carrying their Nations’ songs, dances and traditions, these canoes gather each night to potlatch and celebrate among family, friends, and spectators.

More than simply getting in a canoe and paddling, the journey represents a yearlong effort of preparation, as community members join together to practice cultural protocols that have guided ocean-going journeys since the time before memory. Countless hours are spent creating regalia, learning songs and dances, harvesting traditional plants and medicines, and crafting give-aways for thousands of participants.
