Housing

True North Aid is proud to support various Community-Led Initiatives across the country focused on housing and providing furniture to homes across the north, including our Good Night’s Sleep Campaign and Furniture for First Nations in Treaty #3. Other projects include partnerships with One House Many Nations and helping to build “tiny homes” for at-risk youth experiencing homelessness.

Key Findings: Housing Inequities in Indigenous Populations

Homelessness

Homes in Need of Major Repairs

  • In 2021, Indigenous people were nearly three times as likely to live in homes requiring major repairs, 16.4% compared to just 5.7% of the non-Indigenous population.

Crowded Housing

  • More than one in six Indigenous individuals, approximately 309,000 people, lived in overcrowded housing that did not meet the needs of the household size, nearly twice the rate of the non-Indigenous population.

Housing Shortages

  •  An estimated 157,453 homes are needed to address the housing crisis in Indigenous communities.
  • To close the housing gap, funding for First Nations housing must be 80% greater than the national average.

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - Article 21

Indigenous peoples have the right, without discrimination, to the improvement of their economic and social conditions, including, inter alia, in the areas of education, employment, vocational training and retraining, housing, sanitation, health and social security.
