One House, Many Nations Nutana Project
Province: Saskatchewan
Community: Big River
Date: 2022 -2023
Housing is a crisis situation on First Nations. In particular, First Nations youth, including women and two spirit youth, are impacted. Training and supporting homeless youth or youth at risk of homelessness provides a way to address the systemic housing crisis while also creating solutions in the form of houses and capacity building. The One House Many Nations project includes volunteers who are educators, carpenters, students, architects, cultural practitioners and youth. The goal for the True North Aid project was to design and build one house and at the end of the project 2 houses were built! The 6 youth participants at Big River aided in the design and build and the house was primarily built by the Nutana Collegiate Industrial Education high school program. The Big River youth are First Nations and the Nutana youth are primarily First Nations and Metis.
