True North Aid was proud to sponsor the Backyard Niitawaakiiks Program in Siksika First Nation, Alberta. For several weeks, five families learned about egg management, meat processing, and chicken behaviours, and have built coops to house their chickens. This project was key to self-determination and food security for these families, as they were able to provide themselves with a healthy food choice and able to sell their excess eggs at a local market. In the fall of 2021, this program grew to provide and train families with meat birds for them to eat and store for over the winter months.
